Tumblr’s insistence that girls are these perfect angels makes me viscerally sick to my stomach. As a girl with autism I don’t think anyone betrayed me more than other girls.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve also met girls who were loving, kind, and accepting of me for who I was, and I’ve also met boys who treated me like shit. It’s never the same for all people because everyone is different.
But after being lied to, ganged up on, ostracized, and gaslit so many times by other girls and most of the time the adults in my life didn’t help me and took the bullies’ side. When I see Tumblr hold up girls as these saintly and sympathetic people who always stick up for each other I feel like I’m meeting those adults who stood by and did nothing, all over again.
The problem is the insistence that women always stick up for each other and never say anything bad about each other. But sometimes a woman is in the wrong and it’s okay to admit that. If a woman is kind, if a woman is talented, if a woman is beautiful, then great, say it. But not every woman is. You don’t have to pretend every woman is perfect and capable of doing anything when that’s just not the case. And if a woman is a liar or a bully, don’t be afraid to say it.
I’m pretty sure all these people who are like “girls are kind and amazing and so much less toxic than boys” completely forgot about high school. Or they were the queen bees at high school and had no idea what it was like not to be that.
